Brewing Dreams: Benny’s Inspiring Journey as a Visually Impaired Barista

Becoming a barista is a dream shared by many young people. For 27-year-old Benny, this dream once seemed impossible. Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 10, Benny’s vision deteriorated drastically over the years, from 70% to less than 10%. His world, once filled with vibrant colors, has faded to mere light and shadow.

“I used to feel hopeless,” Benny shares. “Even pouring a glass of water seemed insurmountable.” But with the support of visually impaired friends, Benny learned essential life skills and began to regain confidence. In August of last year, he joined the Visually Impaired Barista Training Program, co-organized by the Hong Kong Association for the Blind, Peninsula Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Coffee Pro. After completing the program, Benny became a professional barista and now works at LEX Café in Western District—the café’s only visually impaired barista.

For Benny, every step of coffee-making—from frothing milk to pouring latte art—requires more time and effort than most. “I rely on sound and touch,” he explains, using his heightened senses to perfect the coffee’s temperature and taste. Despite challenges, Benny thrives, handling tasks like dishwashing and cleaning alongside his colleagues.

Benny’s story is a testament to resilience, teamwork, and the power of inclusion. His journey inspires others to see ability, not limitation, in every individual.
